STREETCAR FEST SHATTERS RIDERSHIP RECORD
More Than 14,000 Rides Taken on Streetcar System's 6th Anniversary
October 13, 2008, Tampa, Florida - - Bay area residents set a new single-day ridership record for the sixth anniversary of the TECO Line Streetcar System on Saturday, taking a total of 14,603 rides during the In-Town Tampa Guide & Map Streetcar Fest, the annual celebration of the streetcar system's return to Tampa.
The final total outpaced last year's ridership of 13,451 for the event, the system's previous single-day ridership record.
The In-Town Tampa Guide & Map Streetcar Fest offered riders a chance to jump on the streetcar for only 5¢ from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Restaurants and attractions from Ybor City to Channelside to dowtown Tampa joined in the fun with special discounts and events for streetcar riders.
Fiscal year 2008, which ran from October 1, 2007 to September 30, 2008, ended with a record-high total 440,738 rides. That's slightly above last year's record ridership of 440,200.
